Tiverton Literary festival - women of mystery

Saturday 28th september 2024

Doors open 6.30 pm for 7pm start (bar will stay open after event too)

TALK, MEET AND MINGLE

These three authors are taking part on the 2024 Tiverton Literary Festival - Jennie Godfrey, Meg Clothier and Fiona Williams.

Jennie Godfrey's Sunday Times Number 3 Bestseller: The list of Suspicious Things - Yorkshire, 1979 Maggie Thatcher is prime minister, drainpipe jeans are in, and Miv is convinced that her dad wants to move their family Down South. Because of the murders. What if the real mystery Miv needs to solve is the one that lies much closer to home?

Meg Clothier: The Book of Eve - Beatrice is the convent's librarian. For years, she has shunned the company of her sisters, finding solace only with her manuscripts. Then, one carnival night, two women, bleeding and stricken, are abandoned outside the convent's walls. Moments from death, one of them presses something into Beatrice's hands: a bewitching book whose pages have a dangerous life of their own.

Fiona Williams: The House of Broken Bricks - Ain't nothing wrong with being broken. Nothing at all. You're like these houses, not a whole brick in em and look how strong they are. As Tess traces the sunrise over the floodplains, light that paints the house a startling crimson, she yearns for the comforting chaos of life as it once was.

DANCE, MUSIC AND POETRY

As we grow older does our imagination become less important? Do we let go of the magic? Why does everything have to make sense? As children transition into teenagers, they play less, forgoing imagination and fantasy for more serious pursuits and relationships as they try to find their place in the world. Can we remind children to hold on to the wonderful world of fairy tales?

Petals & Tales is a performance featuring dance, music, poetry and fairy tales. The show, performed in the round, features a magic tree surrounded by hundreds of flower petals.

We tell the story of the Flowerpot Man, a magical tale that encourages children to allow wonderful, incredible and improbable things to be a part of their lives.

Petals & Tales is a collaboration between Panta Rei Danseteater (NO) and the Korean company SangSang Maru. Further information, images and video can be viewed on their website

This performance is brought to us  by Devon-based arts charity Villages in Action.

Tickets £15 Adult, £8 Child and Family (2 Adult and 2 Child) £42 - click here

Sat 6th JULY 2024, doors 7pm

Join us for a captivating evening of live music and conversation with Devon folk artist Holly Ebony.

Commissioned by Phoenix Archive Project, Holly Ebony and band perform her new song cycle reflecting on themes around family, social change, travel, colonialism and relationship to place arising from the footage.

Exeter Phoenix has digitised an extraordinary historical resource: approximately 5 hours of 16mm film footage from the 1930s to the 1960s. This archive documents one family's travels around the world, offering a vivid historical record of both daily life and major world events during this tumultuous period.

Holly Ebony's song cycle draws inspiration from this archive, and sections of the footage will be screened as part of the event, accompanied by her evocative music.

Cascading vocals heady & peaty raw as the Dartmoor landscape she hails from, her ‘intoxicating’ (Fatea) 2023 debut album Born For These Times is ‘surprisingly potent’ (RNR) Female led folk of ‘Easy Excellence’ (ArtsCulture), serene harmony & elemental ferocity and led to Holly supporting both Jesca Hoop and Lady Nade.

Please note that entry to the event is free, and option for cheeseboards. Doors will open at 7pm, and the performance will begin at 7.30pm  for approx. 60 mins.

Please book even though free so we can account for numbers.
